JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With adverse weather predicted into the weekend, the Coast Guard is urging the maritime community and the boating public to monitor coastal and offshore weather conditions before deciding to go out to sea.
High winds and rough seas related to Hurricane Danielle are predicted in the coming days and may lead to a higher risk of rip currents along the Atlantic Coast. A possible small craft advisory may be in effect for much of Northern and Central Florida into the weekend. Mariners are urged to use caution and follow the progression and possible intensification of the storm closely.
“A combination of the peripheral effects of Hurricane Danielle and an approaching storm system will cause high surf and potentially hazardous conditions along the coast over the upcoming weekend. Marine interests are urged to closely monitor the latest weather forecasts and observations for Northern and Central Florida through Sunday,” said Cmdr. Patrick Schreiber, chief of response at Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville.
Adverse weather effects generated by a depression, storm, or hurricane can cover an area hundreds of miles wide. Even those recreational boaters and the maritime industry who fall outside the direct path of a storm are advised to be cognizant of dangerous weather conditions and take appropriate precautions to stay safe and minimize damage.
Tips to help mariners protect themselves, their families, and their vessels include:
- Avoid going to sea in a recreational boat if you know a tropical disturbance is approaching.
- Adverse weather offshore may lead to a higher risk of rip currents at area beaches.
- Contact local marinas to ask for advice about securing your vessel. Marina operators are knowledgeable and can advise you on the best methods for securing your boat.
- Take action early. The effects of a tropical disturbance event can be felt well in advance of the storm itself and can prevent the safe completion of preparations.
- Storms move quickly and are unpredictable. You can always replace a boat; you cannot replace a life.
