ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Coast Guard urges boaters to use extreme caution on the upper Mississippi River.

Heavy rains and high waters have deposited large amounts of debris into the river creating unsafe boating conditons.

Lock 11 near Dubuque, Iowa, through Lock 22 near Hannibal, Mo., are closed.

The Coast Guard would like to remind boater’s of the following:

  • Boaters can be held responsible for any damage caused by their wake.
  • An estimated 95 percent of the boat ramps are inaccessible along the river.
  • Boaters should ensure life jackets are worn at all times.
  • Locks are closed to both commercial and recreational boat traffic and are anticipated to remain so for the next several days as the river levels are expected to continue rising over throughout the week.
  • The Lock closures and submerged boat ramps could result in an extended response time for emergency responders to access your location and provide assistance.
