Coast Guard to welcome the Barque Eagle into New York

EagleNEW YORK — The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is scheduled to arrive in New York City, Thursday.

Their voyage will commemorate 70-years since the original journey from northern Germany to New York.

The Eagle was constructed in 1936 and was acquired from Germany as a war reparation following World War II. It is the only active commissioned sailing vessel in the armed services and is primarily used to train cadets from the Coast Guard Academy.

The arrival will also coincide with the Coast Guard’s 226th birthday.

Eagle will also be open for free public tours at the Intrepid Pier for the following dates and times:

Aug. 4, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Aug. 5, To Be Determined

Aug. 6, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Aug. 7, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
