Coast Guard to welcome back Maine Responder from Deepwater Horizon Response

PORTLAND, Maine – The Coast Guard will welcome back the Maine Responder, a 208-foot oil spill response vessel, from their deployment to the Gulf of Mexico in support of the Deepwater Horizon response, to Portland, Maine, Sept. 30, 2010.

Deepwater Horizon ResponseThe Maine Responder is operated by the Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC).

MSRC is a long-time member of the Maine and New Hampshire Area Maritime Committee, and regularly works with the Coast Guard and other federal, state and local agencies to prepare for, and respond to, spills of oil or hazardous materials into the maritime environment. The Maine Responder also played a key role in the Spill of National Significance exercise held this past March in Maine.

The return of the Maine Responder highlights the many noteworthy contributions that many local, state and federal representatives from Maine have made, and continue to make, to the Deepwater Horizon spill response. Active duty and reserve members from Sector Northern New England in Portland have filled approximately 115, 30 to 90-day deployments throughout the Gulf, and continue to deploy in support of the ongoing effort.
