Coast Guard to publicly recognize Auxiliary Flotilla 29 for “Operation Joint Response”

7th Coast Guard District NewsCHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coast Guard will present the Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation to members of Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 29 and local interagency partners during a ceremony at the University Yacht Club at Lake Lanier in Flowery Branch, Ga., at 1 p.m., Tuesday

The award is being presented following the first ever multi-agency joint operation between Coast Guard Sector Charleston, Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 29, Tow Boat US, Hall County Sheriff’s Department, Hall County Fire Services, Army Corps of Engineers, Dive 911, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Hall County 911 and Lanier Striper Club.

“Operation Joint Response” was a full-scale, full-play exercise designed to test the mass casualty response capabilities of various rescue and law enforcement agencies and Unified Command coordination on Lake Lanier. Lake Lanier is an Army Corps of Engineers lake located approximately 45 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The lake is approximately 40,000 surface acres, 23 miles long, and contains more than 500 miles of shoreline with numerous coves and bays. Boating traffic is dense during peak boating season and includes approximately 10,000 private boat docks, 11 marinas, and a contingent of large houseboats, including the largest in the world at 120-feet.

“This is a great example of the value the Coast Guard Auxiliary provides to the American public. As the primary Coast Guard presence on Lake Lanier, these volunteers fill a role on the water, and in the command post that their active-duty counterparts fulfill elsewhere, not the least of which is as trusted partner for the myriad of local agencies represented in this award presentation,” said Capt. Michael F. White, Jr., commander, Coast Guard Sector Charleston.

Established by Congress in 1939, the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary is an all-voluntary uniformed civilian element of the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard Auxiliary has had a presence on Lake Lanier since 1956.
