Coast Guard to present Public Service Commendation to good Samaritans

Coast Guard District 7 NewsBRUNSWICK, Ga. — The Coast Guard will recognize two-good Samaritans during a ceremony scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at Coast Guard Station Brunswick.

The Coast Guard will present the Meritorious Public Service Commendation to Gale Bishop and Timothy Keith-Lucas for their role in the rescue of two-fishermen on St. Catherine’s Island, Ga., June 22, 2011.

Bishop and Keith Lucas assisted two-severely injured fishermen out of the water and provided first-aid care after their crabbing vessel exploded. After stabilizing both men, Bishop and Keith-Lucas kept the fishermen calm and provided vital updates to the Coast Guard on the their conditions and relayed the positional information in order for an Air Station Savannah helicopter rescue crew to get on scene and airlift the men to the hospital.

Bishop’s and Keith-Lucas’s quick actions and willingness to respond enabled the Coast Guard to conduct the rescue.

The Meritorious Public Service Award is the second highest Coast Guard issued public service award and will be awarded to Bishop and Keith-Lucas to recognize their substantial contributions to Coast Guard missions.
