Coast Guard to Patrol for Surf Competition

ALAMEDA, Calf. – The Coast Guard will be conducting safety patrols around the waters and the cliff sides this weekend during the Mavericks surfing competition.

A number of assets are scheduled to be on stand-by and ready for deployment during the competition in case of any emergency that may arise in the water or near the cliffs. The assets scheduled to respond include a rescue helicopter, which will be making over flights at various times; an 87-foot patrol boat that will monitor the area; and a rescue boat, that will be checking on conditions throughout the day.

The waves are expected to be very large this weekend. Heavy weather such as this make conditions hazardous, where even the most experienced surfer may find themself in a dangerous situation. These types of conditions are what the Coat Guard trains for in case a life is on the line.
