Coast Guard to participate in monument dedication ceremony to honor lighthouse keeper Kate Moore

Kathleen MooreNEW HAVEN – The Coast Guard and Black Rock Community Council will be holding a monument dedication ceremony to honor 19th century lighthouse keeper Kate Moore, at 10 a.m. Saturday, in Black Rock, Connecticut.

The community of Black Rock is formally recognizing Moore’s service with the dedication of the Kate Moore Memorial to honor her heroism as a lighthouse keeper.

Moore was the legendary keeper of the Black Rock Harbor Lighthouse from 1823 to 1879 during which time she rescued some 21 mariners shipwrecked near the harbor. The U.S. Coast Guard recently launched a Sentinel-class fast response cutter bearing Moore’s name.
