Coast Guard to open forward operating location in Barrow, Alaska

Coast Guard Alaska News
KODIAK, Alaska — The Coast Guard is scheduled to open its seasonal forward operating location in Barrow Thursday in support of Operation Arctic Shield 2014.

Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak has deployed an aviation detachment consisting of two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters crews, along with supporting air and ground communication crews, in advance of the official stand-up.

The forward deployed crews will receive logistical support from Air Station Kodiak-based HC-130 Hercules airplane crews throughout their deployment.

“With an increased number of vessels operating in the region during the summer months, being deployed in Barrow will allow us to rapidly respond to mariners in need of assistance,” said Lt. Matt Carlton, pilot, Air Station Kodiak. “This also gives us an opportunity to build interagency partnerships and increase our Arctic maritime domain awareness.”

Air Station Kodiak’s forward operating location in Barrow minimizes response times to search and rescue cases in the Arctic Ocean.
