Coast Guard to medevac crewman from Global Prosperity

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Coast Guard is moving assets to Adak Island preparation for a medevac of an ill crewman from a bulk cargo vessel at first light Sunday.

The Coast Guard received an e-mail at 2:08 a.m. from the master of the 580-foot bulk cargo vessel Global Prosperity requesting a medevac for a 40-year old crewman suffering from gastrointestinal distress.

Two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters forward deployed from Air Station Kodiak to Cold bay will conduct the medevac from Adak Island. At this time commercial medevac services are being arranged to further medevac the man from Adak to Anchorage.

The Global Prosperity is more than 500 miles south of Adak on a voyage from Japan to New Westminster, Canada, at the time of the request. The have changed course toward Adak to close the distance the helicopters will be required to fly.

The Panamanian-flagged vessel has a Chinese crew.

Weather in the vicinity is reported as southeast winds at 14 mph gusting to 32 mph. It is overcast with seas at 11 feet.
