Coast Guard to implement a safety zone during Search and Rescue demonstration Wednesday

SEATTLE —The Coast Guard will establish and maintain an on-water safety zone around Pier 66 here during an aerial search and rescue demonstration Wednesday at 2 p.m. Local Coast Guard response boat crews will enforce a 100-yard safety zone around Pier 66. All vessels are asked to stay well clear of the area until the conclusion of the demonstration.

Although long range plans and federal rulemaking called for this safety zone to have been implemented earlier in the day, that is no longer necessary for the Parade of Ships event given the U.S. Navy’s recent announcement that the Parade of Ships will transit further away (approximately 500 yards) from shore.

Safety zones are necessary to ensure the safety of the public during naval and aerial displays, and to allow unencumbered access of emergency response craft in the event of an accident.
