Coast Guard to honor fallen shipmate at Station Destin

Destin, FL – U.S. Coast Guard Station Destin will dedicate the Lonnie Jones Memorial on Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Lonnie Jones, a machinery technician, was killed in the line of duty March 30, 1981, while responding to a search and rescue case in the vicinity of Destin. This ceremony will render the proper military honors to Jones, which includes a 21-gun salute and a fly-over from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans.

“Petty Officer Jones was never given military honors,” said Chief Petty Officer Scott Goss, executive petty officer of Coast Guard Station Destin. “Destin is a small community and this really affected the heart of that community. This ceremony is going to be a fitting way to honor Jones.”
