SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Coast Guard and ConocoPhillips will a host a regional emergency response exercise, PREP Exercise 2010, in Savannah Tuesday through Thursday.
The exercise will demonstrate cooperative regional emergency response preparedness and capabilities. The PREP program focuses primarily on oil and hazardous material spills into waterways. The exercise will provide an opportunity for federal, state, local responders and ConocoPhillips to come together and practice a unified command response to a large-scale emergency using the National Incident Management System.
“We make these exercises as realistic as possible so that we’re collectively prepared for a real event,” said Capt. Michael McAllister, commander, Coast Guard Sector Charleston, S.C. “While participants were made aware of the upcoming exercise, they were not told the details they will be facing. They will be exercising response management strategies to unexpected situations. The Coast Guard expects more than 130 people to participate in the exercise.”
“ConocoPhillips places the highest priority on protecting the health and safety of everyone who plays a part in our operations and lives in the communities in which we operate. Therefore, it is critical that we continually test our abilities to respond to incidents or emergency situations,” said Randy Cornwell, ConocoPhillips. “More than 60 ConocoPhillips personnel will participate in the exercise, including the company’s America’s Incident Management Assist Team, which brings together ConocoPhillips specialists from across North America.”
