Coast Guard to hold safety workshop for New Bedford fishermen

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – The Coast Guard is scheduled to give dozens of local fishermen a day of hands-on safety training at the Fort Rodman Military Reservation here Friday.

Using specialized safety and training equipment, fishermen will learn how to repair a flooding boat, survive in cold water, fight onboard fires, rescue a man overboard, and use signal flares.

An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod is scheduled to land a Jawhawk helicopter at 1:30 p.m. to familiarize the fishermen with rescue procedures and airlift operations.

Additional organizers include the City of New Bedford’s New Directions program and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Now in its fourth year, this is the 24th workshop of its kind in which 755 fishermen have participated.
