Coast Guard to hold memorial service for Vietnam War hero

WOODS HOLE, Mass. — A memorial service will be held at US Coast Guard Station Chatham located at 37 Main Street Chatham, MA. 02633 on Wednesday, June 16th at 1130 for a Vietnam War era Coast Guard hero, Chief Petty Officer Richard Patterson.

Chief Patterson was a legendary Coast Guardsman best remembered for his heroic courage under fire when the Cutter Point Welcome (WPB 82329) was attacked by friendly fire from U.S. Air Force aircraft near the demilitarized zone in South Vietnam on August 11, 1966. Chief Patterson succumbed to cancer on April 12th, surrounded by family and friends.

Following the memorial service, BMC Patterson’s ashes will be scattered at sea.
