Coast Guard to Examine Commercial Fishing Vessels in Petersburg

JUNEAU, AK – Vessel examiners from Coast Guard Sector Juneau will conduct free courtesy dockside exams of commercial fishing vessels in Petersburg, AK from May 14 to May 20, 2007. Vessels that fully comply with Coast Guard regulations will earn decals that will lessen their chances of being subject to Coast Guard boardings while underway.

The professional team of vessel examiners will be happy to answer questions and provide materials that will enhance vessel safety. The examiners will also be available to clear any outstanding violations received during pervious Coast Guard 4100 boardings.

Safety prevention programs offered by the Coast Guard and partnering agencies and organizations have reduced commercial fishing vessel casualties nation-wide by more than fifty percent over the past ten years. With between eighty-five and ninety percent of its commercial fishing vessel fleet taking part in Coast Guard safety programs, the Port of Petersburg ranks first in Alaska for per capita participation.
