Coast Guard to establish safety zone on Monongahela River

PITTSBURGH — The Coast Guard is scheduled to establish a safety zone on portions of the Monongahela River Saturday, May 16, 2009 from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

In support of the Pittsburgh Dragon Boat Festival, the captain of the port for Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley will restrict navigation spanning the entire width of the river.

Restrictions are as follows: mile marker 2.2 (Southside Riverfront Park Boat Ramp) to mile marker 2.7 (27th Street) extending 100 feet out from the left descending bank.

Persons and vessels will not be allowed to enter, depart or move within the safety zone unless specifically authorized by the captain of the port or a designated representative.

Questions concerning this matter should be directed to Lt. j.g. Douglas Kang at (412) 644-5808 ext. 2108 during normal working hours between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. After normal working hours, contact Marine Safety Unit Pittsburgh command duty officer at (412) 670-4288.

All concerned traffic can contact the Coast Guard on the day of the event on VHF-FM Channel 16.
