Coast Guard to establish safety zone on Allegheny River

PITTSBURGH — The Coast Guard is scheduled to establish a safety zone on portions of the Allegheny River Saturday, May 16, 2009, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

In support of the Venture Outdoors Festival event, the captain of the port for Coast Guard Sector Ohio Valley will restrict navigation spanning the entire width of the river. Persons and vessels will not be allowed to enter, depart or move within the safety zone unless specifically authorized by the captain of the port or a designated representative.

Restrictions are as follows: mile marker 0.0 (Point State Park) to mile marker 1.0 (Norfolk and Southern Railroad Bridge) extending 328 feet out from the left descending bank.

Questions concerning this matter should be directed to Lt. j.g. Douglas Kang at (412) 644-5808 ext. 2108 during normal working hours between 7:30 am and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. After normal working hours, contact the Marine Safety Unit Pittsburgh command duty officer at (412) 670-4288.

All concerned vessel operators can contact the Coast Guard on the day of the event on VHF-FM Channel 16.
