Coast Guard to establish safety zone in Port of Long Beach

cg-D11SAN PEDRO, Calif. – The Coast Guard will establish a 100-yard safety zone around the Tesoro facility (Piers B and T in Long Beach) which will impact a group of protestors in kayaks near the Tesoro Piers in the Port of Long Beach, Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

Due to the possible dangers posed by larger, less maneuverable vessels in the port, the Coast Guard Captain of the Port, Capt. Jennifer Williams, has established the zone.

“We respect the individual’s rights to peacefully protest. We just want to ensure for the safety of kayakers and other waterway users while doing so,” said Williams.

Captain of the Port duties involve enforcing within their respective areas port safety and security and marine environmental protection regulations, including regulations for the protection and security of vessels, harbors, and waterfront facilities; anchorages; security zones; safety zones; regulated navigation areas; deepwater ports; water pollution; and ports and waterways safety.
