Coast Guard to establish safety zone for Red Bull Air Races

SAN DIEGO — Coast Guard Sector San Diego will establish a safety zone for the Red Bull Air Races that are scheduled to be held over the San Diego Bay May 7-10 between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

The purpose of the safety zone is to ensure the safety of the spectators and participants during the races, including recreational boaters and commercial mariners.

Persons and vessels are prohibited from entering into, transiting through, or anchoring within the safety zone unless authorized by the Coast Guard Patrol Commander (PATCOM). The safety zone may be open on occasion to allow for vessel traffic movement.

While on the water, boaters are encouraged to make contact with the vessels enforcing the safety zones. Event organizers will provide vessels marked with a large orange sign “Caution – Event in Progress.” All perimeter vessels will have informational flyers indicating the length of the safety zones and event status.

Red Bull Air Race pilots will navigate a race course through inflatable pylons on floating platforms in the fastest possible time. Flying individually against the clock, the pilots have to execute tight turns through a slalom course in an area over the waters of San Diego Bay adjacent to the Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South.

During the event, the PATCOM can be reached while the Safety Zone is in effect on Marine Band radio channel 16.
