Coast Guard to conduct ice breaking in the lower St. Clair River

DETROIT – Ice breaking efforts conducted over the last week where successful in flushing ice from the St. Clair River, however in order to prevent rising waters from reaching flood stage the USCGC BRISTOL BAY along with the USCGC PENOBSCOT BAY are scheduled to commence ice breaking operation in the St. Clair River, beginning 13 February 2010, at 10:00 am, and again on 14 February 2010, beginning at sunrise and continuing until sunset both days.

This operation will include the North Channel of the St. Clair River and has the potential to effect the operation of the Harsens Island Ferry.

As a precaution, please remain clear of ice breaking operations to avoid injury, property loss or damage. The Canadian Coast Guard ice breakers, GRIFFON and SAMUEL RISLEY will also be participating in the ice breaking effort.

Coast Guard Sector Detroit directly oversees all Coast Guard missions from Alpena, Michigan to Vermillion, Ohio on Lake Huron, the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers, Lake St. Clair and Western Lake Erie.
