Coast Guard to conduct boom-deployment exercise

MIAMI – The Coast Guard is scheduled to conduct a joint pollution equipment deployment exercise Friday on the southeastern part of the beach inside Virginia Key Beach Park.

Boatcrews from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Fla., Aids to Navigation Team Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue will work alongside Coast Guard Sector Miami personnel to deploy oil containment boom to practice shoreline protection strategies and mitigation techniques in accordance with the South Florida Area Contingency Plan.

The oil containment boom deployment is part of an annual training program designed to better prepare Coast Guard personnel in advance of a real oil-spill event. The exercise is scheduled to last approximately four hours and will be followed by a post exercise de-brief.
