Coast Guard to conduct boating safety operations on Connecticut River

BOSTON — Coast Guard, state, and local crews will be on the Connecticut River near North Hampton, Mass., from Friday, June 18, through Sunday, June 20, 2010, enforcing boating laws and providing boater education.

The crews will be boarding recreational boats to ensure the minimum required safety gear is on board the vessel.

All recreational vessels at a minimum must have a life jacket for each person aboard, a sound producing device such as an air horn, at least one fire extinguisher for closed construction boats and navigation lights from sunset to sunrise and restricted visibility.

The Coast Guard has received several reports of unsafe boating practices in the area, and is operating in the area to provided education and encourage safe boating habits.
