Coast Guard to close Rogue River Detachment for the season

Coast Guard District 13 NewsASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard will close its seasonal Rogue River Search and Rescue Detachment in Gold Beach, Ore., Friday.

The Rogue River Detachment, an extension of Station Chetco River in Brookings, Ore., is manned and operated from Memorial Day weekend through early fall.

Mariners are advised that the closest Coast Guard response assets to the Rogue River entrance will now come from Coast Guard Station Chetco River.

The Pacific Northwest is home to some of the roughest river bars in the world. Many boating accidents and fatalities in the Pacific Northwest have been attributed to hazardous coastal bar conditions.

The Coast Guard conducts surveillance on the bars during predawn hours to sundown. Each station broadcasts bar conditions on VHF Channel 16 as well as a recorded voice line that can be reached by telephone.

Boaters should check closure information and current bar restrictions by contacting their local Coast Guard unit.
