Coast Guard to break ice in Green Bay Shipping Channel

MILWAUKEE — The Coast Guard is advising Green Bay area residents that Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay is scheduled to conduct ice-breaking operations on the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal and on Green Bay south of Green Island Monday and Tuesday.

This ice-breaking operation is part of a greater ice-breaking effort across the Great Lakes known as Operation Taconite, which is managed by Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and takes place in the western Great Lakes — lakes Superior and Michigan, the St. Marys River, the Straits of Mackinac, and northern Lake Huron.

The cutter is preparing for the arrival and departure of commercial vessels into the Port of Green Bay, Wis.

The possibility of shifting ice may increase and ice in this area should be considered unsafe. The Coast Guard advises everyone to stay clear.
