KEY WEST, Fla. – Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal EOD Unit Nine personnel based out of Mayport, Fla. will be attempting to locate and identify unexploded ordnance near Boca Grande Key, Fla. approximately 11 miles west of Key West on Tuesday.
Multiple smallboat crews from Coast Guard Station Key West and Aids to Navigation Team Key West will assist by enforcing temporary safety zones during the operations.
A temporary safety zone will be established around the site near Boca Grande Key as Navy EOD Unit Nine personnel positively identify and determine proper disposition for the ordnance. The temporary safety zone will effectively close a portion of the Lakes Passage near Boca Grande while Navy EOD Unit Nine personnel conduct operations.
Vessels will be required to maintain a minimum 1,000-yard distance from the site in position 24o 32.758N, 081o 52.135W starting Tuesday until as late as Thursday. Boaters are requested to make alternate transit arrangements during that time period.
