Coast Guard to announce major tidal energy initiative on Earth Day

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – In observance of Earth Day, the Coast Guard will announce details of a new tidal energy plan at a press conference here Wednesday.

The Coast Guard Research and Development Center in New London, Conn., and Coast Guard Sector Northern New England here have published a Broad Agency Announcement to initiate tidal energy at Coast Guard Station Eastport, Maine.

“We intend to harness the energy from the 20-foot tides and six-knot currents,” said Capt. James McPherson, commander of Sector Northern New England.

Representatives for Senator Olympia Snowe, Senator Susan Collins, and the Governor’s Office of Energy Independence and Security are scheduled to attend this event.

The press conference will include details of the $100,000 project and will recognize the official commissioning of a new wind turbine and solar panels at the base in South Portland.
