Coast Guard Tests New Law Enforcement Tool

Portsmouth, VA – The Coast Guard is testing the application of a new non-lethal law enforcement tool.

The Acoustic Hailing Device (AHD) test will be held aboard the USCGC Cochito at Coast Guard Station Little Creek on Thursday.

The AHD is a high powered, long-rang hailing and warning device that uses acoustic energy to provide a non-lethal warning.

“In addition to the cutter’s loud hailer or bullhorn system, the AHD will be another beneficial tool for our units conducting escorts of ships. Units will be able to better determine intent of a vessel approaching a security zone from a longer range,” said Lt. Lisa Tinker of Coast Guard’s Fifth District Enforcement Branch.
