Coast Guard teams with Brevard County to Stop BUI’s

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. — Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral teamed up with the Brevard County Sheriff’s office special operations DUI unit to get boaters off the water that were operating their vessel under the influence of drugs or alcohol Saturday afternoon near Sykes Creek, Fla.

Coast Guard and Brevard deputies made four arrests for BUI, issued two citations for speeding in a manatee zone and also cited one of the arrested boaters for simple possession.

“We’re out here to help keep the water safe for families just trying to have a good time on the water, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Geoff Parkinson, a boarding officer from Coast Guard Station Port Canaveral.

A boater arrested for BUI for the first time faces jail time and could receive a fine of up to $5,000. Boaters that receive a citation for speeding in a manatee zone for the first time receive a $125 fine.
