Coast Guard suspends searching for a reported swimmer in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. – The Coast Guard suspended the search Monday night for a missing swimmer who was reportedly seen off the beach near 20th street.

After a boat crew from Station Ocean City and a helicopter crew from Air Station Atlantic City searched the area off the beach for several hours, and based on statements from a swimmer who was rescued, the determination was made that the case was a probable false alert, and the crews returned to their stations.

According to Matthew Brooks, a search and rescue controller for the Fifth Coast Guard District, lifeguards and the one person they rescued said they did not see anyone else out in the water, so the Coast Guard decided it was probably a false alert. Just in case there is someone, the case has been suspended rather than closed. In the event the Coast Guard receives further information, the search will resume.

“We have no reports of any missing persons in the area,” said Brooks.
