CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. – The Coast Guard suspended their search, at 3:48 p.m. Sunday, for a missing man off Carolina Beach. Missing is Angel Gonzalez, 19, of Fayetteville, N.C.
The Angel’s brother reported that they were swimming together off Carolina Beach Saturday afternoon when Angel was swept away. Lifeguards could not locate the him and contacted emergency dispatchers.
The Coast Guard searched with:
- a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Wrightsville Beach
- an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from Air Station Savannah, Ga.
- the Coast Guard Cutter Staten Island, a 110-foot Patrol Boat crew from Sector North Carolina
- a Coast Guard Auxiliary aircraft
Lifeguards and Carolina Beach Police and Fire departments searched with the Coast Guard for the missing man.
The seas were 2-4 feet, winds were 10-15 knots, water was 72 degrees and there were rip tide warnings in the area when Gonzalez was swept away.
