Coast Guard suspends search for windsurfer off Pine Island, N.C.

PINE ISLAND, N.C. – The Coast Guard suspended its search for a windsurfer off Pine Island at 2:04 p.m., Sunday.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector North Carolina received a report at approximately 8:40 p.m. from Currituck County 911 operators of a windsurfer in possible distress 200 yards off shore.

An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter rescue from Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C. along with a 47 foot rescue boat crew from Station Oregon Inlet and members of Ocean Rescue crews conducted a 17-hour search covering over 112 square miles for the windsurfer.
