Coast Guard suspends search for survivors of boat fire near Marina Del Rey

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. — The Coast Guard suspended search efforts in the Santa Monica Bay for individuals associated with the pleasure craft Casey Lynn at 11:10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, following an exhaustive search.

The Coast Guard first received reports on Tuesday afternoon that the 27-foot recreational vessel Casey Lynn was on fire, located approximately one mile offshore of Marina Del Rey, Calif.

A MH-65C Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Los Angeles and Coast Guard Cutter Blackfin, an 87-foot coastal patrol boat, were both dispatched to the scene. Working with assets from the Los Angeles County Sherrif’s Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, crews searched 148 square nautical miles overnight and through the morning. Total straight-line length of search patterns amounted to 812 nautical miles.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sherrif’s Department.
