Coast Guard suspends search for reported downed plane in Lake Pontchatrain

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a possible downed small aircraft on the northside of Lake Pontchatrain, Sunday.

Coast Guard rescue crews from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans and Coast Guard Station New Orleans conducted more than eight hours of searches covering 155 square miles.

Watchstanders with Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a call reporting a small plane crashing into the lake around 8 p.m., Saturday. Coast Guard rescue crews were immediately dispatched to search the area. St. Tammany Parish marine units were also on scene Saturday night.

A small plane was reportedly seen going into Lake Pontchatrain on the eastside of the Causeway Bridge between mile markers four and eight. A missing or overdue aircraft had not been reported at the time of the initial call and no other reports came in overnight.

The search is suspended pending further developments.
