BOSTON — The Coast Guard has suspended the active search, pending further developments, for a possible vessel in distress in Casco Bay, at 12:15 p.m. Sunday.
Coast Guard crews searched more than 520 square nautical miles with no sign of a vessel in distress.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England, in Portland, Maine, received a mayday call at approximately 4:40 p.m., Saturday from an unknown source. Radio direction-finding equipment indicated the call was made from a position in Casco Bay, approximately one mile east of Jewell Island, Maine.
Searching were crews from:
- A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass. MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter
- A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Mass. HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft
- Two 47-foot Motor Life Boats from Coast Guard Station South Portland, Maine
- The 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Jefferson Island
