Coast Guard suspends search for possible mariner in distress near Buzzards Bay, Mass.

BOSTON — The Coast Guard suspended its search Thursday afternoon for a possible mariner in distress in Buzzards Bay after the searches yielded no findings or correlating information.

The Coast Guard launched the search Wednesday night after hearing three faint mayday calls over the radio. Watchstanders responded to the call but were unable to establish communications with the caller.

The search covered a total 767 square nautical miles and included Coast Guard, state, and local responders.

The following resources searched:

  • Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead
  • Coast Guard Cutter Shrike
  • A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Menemsha
  • Fairhaven Fire Department
  • New Bedford Fire Department
  • Mattapoisett Fire Department
  • Dartmouth Fire Department
  • Massachusetts Environmental Police

The search is suspended pending the development of any new information.
