Coast Guard suspends search for possible distress near Del Mar

SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard suspended the search for possible people in distress related to debris found nine miles west of Del Mar, Calif., Friday evening.

A Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew searched for two and a half hours, covering approximately 50 square miles.

A boater alerted the Coast Guard to a sailboat mast and sail floating offshore just before 1 p.m., which prompted the search for any possible people in distress.

Active search operations were suspended at 6:30 p.m., pending any further information.
