Coast Guard suspends search for person in the water near Bayou Bienvenue

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard has suspended the search for Haskin Payne III near Bayou Bienvenu, Friday evening.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans suspended the search at 6:05 p.m. after St. Bernard Sheriff Department located the body.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report at 4 p.m., Thursday, from St. Bernard Sheriff Department that Haskin Payne III had fallen off a 20-foot pleasure craft near Six Flags New Orleans. Payne’s wife was also aboard the vessel and reported that after Payne fell she attempted to assist him, but lost sight of him.

Involved in the search was:

  • Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries
  • Bernard Sheriff Department
  • Coast Guard Station New Orleans 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water boat crews
  • Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrews
  • A Navy unit P-8-Alpha aircrew
