NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a possible missing person in the water near the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, approximately 9 miles from Metairie, Louisiana, Sunday.
Members from St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office located a vehicle in Lake Pontchartrain near a damaged guardrail on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office recovered the vehicle with one deceased male inside.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received a report by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office at 3:45 a.m. that there was debris and a damaged guardrail on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway. It was also reported that causeway police reviewed video and saw vehicle headlights prior to the guardrail damage that disappeared soon after, indicating that a car had gone into the water.
The body was transported to the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
