Coast Guard suspends search for overboard Army soldier

DRUM INLET, N.C. – The Coast Guard suspended the search today for an overboard crewmember of the Army vessel Major General Winfield Scott off the coast of Drum Inlet, south of Ocracoke Inlet.

The Army contacted Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector North Carolina Sunday at 11:20 a.m. requesting assistance in the search for the crewmember.

Coast Guard helicopter, airplane, and rescue boat crews from Air Station Elizabeth City, boat stations Fort Macon and Hatteras Inlet, the crews of Coast Guard Cutter Cochito and Block Island, and a Pedro helicopter rescue crew from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point searched more than 1,572 square nautical miles during the 40-hour search for the crewmember. The search area was larger than the state of Rhode Island.

The Army vessel Major General Winfield is homeported in Fort Eustis, Va.
