Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Tarpon Springs Man

TARPON SPRINGS, Fla. – The Coast Guard suspended the search for Joseph Reed, 40, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., at about 8:30 p.m. today after searching the Gulf of Mexico 35-miles west of Tarpon Springs since about 4:30 p.m. Monday with negative results.

Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg, in St. Petersburg, Fla., received a call at 4:17 p.m. Monday from the captain of the Charlee Girl, reporting that Reed had fallen from the 69-foot commercial shrimping vessel for unknown reasons. A crewmember jumped in the water and attempted to bring Reed back onboard the vessel without success. Reed was reported not to have been wearing a lifejacket.

Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Sand Key, in Clearwater, Fla., Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater, and the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Key Biscayne, homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla., along with officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) searched for about 30 hours with no sign of Reed.
