Coast Guard suspends search for missing swimmer near Gary, Ind.

9th Coast Guard District NewsCLEVELAND – The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing 24-year-old man, who was last seen swimming near Gary, Ind., at about 4:30 p.m., Wednesday.

Search crews from Coast Guard Stations Calumet Harbor, Ill., Michigan City, Ind., and Coast Guard Air Facility Waukegan, Ill., searched for more than four hours in an area covering more than 38 square nautical miles. The Gary Fire Department also greatly contributed to the search.

The Coast Guard suspends a search and rescue case with extreme care and deliberation. After a probable search area is saturated several times with a maximum number of assets, resources and crew effort, and persons in distress are still not located, a decision is made to suspend a case.

The Coast Guard can resume a search if credible information is received that persons reported missing have survived.
