Coast Guard suspends search for missing swimmer in waters off Rio Grande, Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Coast Guard rescue crews suspended their search Monday afternoon for a man who went missing Sunday while swimming in waters off the Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.

Jose Diaz, 21, a resident of Río Piedras, Puerto Rico reportedly was wearing blue trunks when he went swimming approximately a quarter mile offshore, and where he was last seen going underwater and never reaching the surface again.

Coast Guard controllers in the Sector San Juan Joint Rescue Sub Center were contacted Sunday afternoon by a 911 emergency operator, who initially reported the incident to the Coast Guard.

Since the search began Sunday, Coast Guard rescue crews searched for the missing swimmer with HH-65 Dolphin helicopters from Air Station Borinquen, Aguadilla, and a Boat Station San Juan 47-foot Motor Life Boat. Puerto Rico Police rescue crews aboard Cobra marine units, with dive teams onboard, also participated in the search efforts to find Diaz.

“Our thought and prayers go out to the friends and family of Mr. Diaz during these difficult times,” said Capt. Joanna Nunan, Sector San Juan Deputy Commander.
