Coast Guard suspends search for missing swimmer

ASTORIA, Ore. — The Coast Guard suspended the search for a swimmer who went missing off a beach near Oceanside, Ore., Saturday.

The Coast Guard and local authorities had searched for the swimmer for approximately five hours when the search was called off.

The swimmer had been at the beach with his brother when he attempted to swim in 14-foot surf to Three Arch Rocks, located a mile from shore. His brother soon lost site of him at 11:50 a.m. and contacted local authorities.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., and two 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Station Tillamook Bay, Ore., were launched to the scene to search. A jet skier from Netarts Bay, Ore., Fire and Rescue assisted in the search.
