Coast Guard Suspends Search for Missing Sitka Man

JUNEAU, Alaska – The Coast Guard suspended its search at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday for Charles Thompson, a 41 year-old Sitka man who was reported overdue Sunday evening on a boating trip to Seven Fathom Bay Cabin.

Thompson last checked in with friends on Saturday at approximately 9:15 a.m. near Necker Bay where he was reportedly beachcombing in the areas around Seven Fathom Bay. On Sunday evening his Crestliner boat was located on the rocks in Yamani Cove with no sign of him. Information retrieved from the GPS unit aboard the vessel indicated that Thompson may have fallen overboard some time around 11:32 a.m. on Saturday.

The information downloaded from the GPS helped searchers to focus search efforts. Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and Harris Air aircraft conducted numerous searches from the air, while the Coast Guard Cutter Liberty and multiple good Samaritan vessels searched from the water. Sitka Mountain Rescue ground search teams conducted extensive searches of the shoreline. In total over 1,200 miles of land, water and shoreline were searched.
