Coast Guard suspends search for missing pilot in Croatan Sound

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard suspended from search Monday for a man who was reported missing Sunday after a plane crash in the waters of Croatan Sound near Manteo, N.C.

Dive teams from the Department of Transportation and Chicamacomico Banks Fire Department located the submerged plane and a body, Monday.

Dare County dispatch contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina, at approximately 1 p.m. Sunday, reporting a twin-engine airplane from Dare County regional airport crashed while landing.

The Coast Guard issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched crews aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C.

Dare County responders rescued a female passenger and brought her to shore where local emergency medical services personnel took her to a hospital.
