Coast Guard suspends search for missing Nantucket man

The Coast Guard suspended the search at 11:28 a.m., Friday for the 36-year-old Nantucket man who was reported missing Thursday.

Four Coast Guard boats, two cutters a helicopter and a jet searched the waters between Hyannis, Mass., and Nantucket for Jon Hemingway, who went missing from his 23-foot Maritime boat while he and his wife, along with their two children, were transiting from Hyannis to Nantucket Wednesday evening.

The Coast Guard’s 21-hour search covered more than 767 square miles, an area almost double the size of Cape Cod. Boats and cutters searched the entire transit route from Hyannis to Nantucket, and aircraft searched from Chatham, Mass., to Great Neck, Mass., down to Martha’s Vineyard and east of Nantucket.

The Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel’s small boat, a Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., and the Nantucket Police Department also searched the shoreline around Nantucket.

No traces of Hemingway were found.
