ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Coast Guard suspended its search Sunday for a swimmer who went missing off Wildwood Saturday.

Christian Alfred, 24, a Miami native who was attending school in New York City, was reportedly swimming near Rio Grande Avenue when he was witnessed struggling in the water and not resurfacing.

Units involved in the search included:

  • A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City
  • A 25-foot boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Cape May
  • New Jersey State Police
  • Wildwood Beach Patrol
  • Good Samaritans

“My deepest sympathy is with the family, and I can’t imaging what they’re going through at this time,” said Lt. Cmdr. Rick Detar, chief of enforcement at Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay. “Upon initial notification, we had great coordination with state and local authorities, as well as our Coast Guard resources, to maintain an on-scene presence throughout the night and into the morning. When entering the water, ensure you are in a well-supervised area with the proper personal protective gear.”
