Coast Guard suspends search for missing man in Morgan Bay

MOBILE, Ala. — The Coast Guard has suspended the search for a 43-year-old man who went missing from a capsized vessel in the vicinity of Fort Morgan, Saturday.

Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders received a call just after midnight from a good samaritan that a pleasure boat in Mobile Bay had capsized. Two of the three people on the boat were wearing life jackets and safely swam to shore. The missing man was not wearing a life jacket and was last seen clinging to an ice chest.

The Coast Guard searched more than 1,200 square miles with the following units:

  • The 87-foot Coast Guard cutters Stingray and Bonito
  • A 25-foot small boat and crew from Station Dauphin Island
  • A 41-foot small boat and crew from Station Dauphin Island
  • Two MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopters and crew from Air Station New Orleans
  • An HC-144 Ocean Sentry search plane and crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile
  • An HU-25 Falcon search plane and crew from Aviation Training Center Mobile
