Coast Guard suspends search for missing Maine boater

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine- The Coast Guard suspended its search at 7:33p.m., Thursday for a mariner who was reported missing Wednesday near Steuben, Maine.

Three Coast Guard boats and a Jayhawk helicopter searched an area of 100 square miles for about 32 hours over the past two days along with the Maine Marine Patrol, the Maine Fish and Game Warden, and several good Samaritans.

The Maine Marine Patrol recovered one body Wednesday afternoon, but the second boater was not found.

The water temperature is 41F.

“It’s always a difficult decision when we have to suspend a search,” said Edward Herbst, the command duty officer at Coast Guard Sector Northern New England. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and friends affected by this tragic event.”
